Game: Cup 2nd Round
Date: Friday 6 June 2008
Venue: Broad Oak
Weather: A dry evening
Thongsbridge players making debut @ U/13: William Garlick
Toss won by: Thongsbridge
Who batted first: Broad Oak
Summary of team batting firsts innings:
The key having put Broad Oak into bat was to keep their score to a minimum and give the Thongsbridge batters a chance of knocking off the runs.
Broad Oak had some experienced players in their ranks, at least 3 having played representative cricket for Huddersfield. Two of these players opened the innings and at the end of the first over one was back in the pavilion having been clean bowled by David Wagstaff. In came the third of their ‘big’ players and he was also quickly walking back having fallen to an excellent diving catch by David off the bowling of Gabriel Cullaigh.
Broad Oaks other opening batsman showed some strong hitting and retired having made 26.
The Thongsbridge bowling was very tight throughout the innings and was backed up by some excellent work in the field resulting in three of Broad Oaks batters being run out. A particular mention for Will Garlick on his debut and Luke Beaumont for two great long throws to the wicket keeper which resulted in run-outs.
Wicket takers were David Wagstaff with 2, David Wallwork, Gabriel Culaigh, Edward Heald and Luke Ellis Craven with one each. A top performance in the filed restricted Broad Oak to 68 all out
Final innings score; 68 all out
Summary of team batting second innings:
Leo Berry and Gabriel Cullaigh opened the innings and got the team off to a solid start before Gabriel was bowled for 9. Luke Beaumont came in at first wicket and was bowled having made 2. These early wickets raised the hopes of the home team but Leo carried on his form from previous matches hitting a confident 25 before retiring. David Wagstaff followed at number 4 and was run out for 5 by a superb direct hit from a Broad Oak fielder. Edward Heald played his best innings of the season so far and with some powerful shots and pulled the game round to achieve a Thongsbridge victory in the 17th over. Our other batsmen out were Alex McAndrew and Alex James with Luke Ellis-Craven not out.
Final innings score; 69 for 6
Result: Thongsbridge win and progress to the quarter-finals of the cup.
Match Summary:
A very good all round performance and a great team effort – every member of the team contributed to this impressive win.
