Summary of team batting firsts innings:

The innings was opened by Tommy Woodhead & Steven Asquith who between them scored 16 runs with Steve Asquith making double figures by striking three fours and a single off accurate bowling from Golcar.  Whilst the wicket was well prepared, the high wind blowing across the elevated and relatively unsheltered pitch close to Scapegoat Hill made batting and bowling difficult as the ball was moving unpredictably in the wind.  Despite the conditions and consistently accurate bowling from Golcar, the remaining pairs all scored well with over 10 runs per pair.  Heather Crossley & Thomas Webster were the third and highest scoring partnership making 26 runs between them.  Thomas Webster and Jasper Donlan both got into double figures.  Thomas hit four fours and made 18 runs in total, the highest scorer of the day whilst Jasper in the final partnership with John Hodgson hit a six as part of his 12 run innings.  Every batsman had runs on the board and Lewis Kenworthy, Ben Lindley, Heather, Shaun Burrows and Andrew Cuthill all made useful contributions to Thongsbridge’s score.   Bowling highlights for Golcar included Zack Wilson with 1 wicket for 14 runs, Joel Barker with 2 wickets for 8 runs and Dan Elliker with 2 wickets for 12 runs. Thongsbridge lost 7 wickets during the innings due not only to the quality of the bowling and windy conditions but some sharp fielding by Golcar which resulted in two run outs.

Final innings score;         290-7   (234 net score)

Summary of team batting second innings:

In the second innings, the Thongsbridge bowlers were able to use the conditions to their advantage despite the wind.  This restricted the scoring of Golcar’s batsmen with the exception of Roberts in the opening pair who scored 13 including two fours, Wilson who scored 9 runs including a four and Elliker who scored 6 runs including a four.  The highlights of Thongsbridge’s performance included an accurate and economical spell of bowling by Steven Asquith yielding 1 wicket for 2 runs following a great catch by Tommy Woodhead and Jasper Donlan who managed 2 wickets for a rather less economical 18 runs, one of which was another very well taken catch by Tommy Woodhead.  Skipper Andrew Cuthill also bowled extremely accurately too taking 1 wicket for 3 runs and Heather Crossley, the Wicket Keeper took a nice catch off Lewis Kenworthy’s bowling notching up 1 more wicket to his bowling record.  John Hodgson also bowled economically at 2 overs for 3 runs narrowly missing a “caught and bowled” wicket in his first over.  Thongsbridge’s fielding as a team was impressive too providing good cover which restricted the number of runs scored from boundaries, especially the short downhill boundary to the west on the Golcar side of the field as well as enabling 3 well taken catches during the innings.

Final innings score;          245-5     (205 net score)

Result:                                  Thongsbridge won by 29 runs

Match Summary:

In summary, good batting and high scoring (12 fours and a six) in the first innings put Thongsbridge in a strong position going into the second innings despite the conditions and the loss of 7 wickets.  Accurate & economical bowling and strong fielding in extremely difficult and windy conditions by Thongsbridge restricted Golcar’s ability to score runs and enabled Thongsbridge to take 5 wickets in the second innings.  This hindered Golcar from putting together an effective response and a great team effort by Thongsbridge in all areas of the game yielded a confident first league win of the season.
